SILLIMAN U LAW STUDENT AMONG TOP ORALISTS IN JESSUP PHILIPPINE QUALIFYING ROUNDS

/ 24 March 2025

A LAW student from Silliman University was among the top oralists in the Philippine Qualifying Rounds of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, recently held at the University of Santo Tomas.

Christian Brodeth secured the 9th spot in the competition, representing the respondent as an agent for the Silliman University team. The team, composed of nine members, tackled the Naegea Sea dispute.

To prepare, the team conducted intensive practice rounds, simulating real courtroom conditions, refining arguments, and ensuring a deep understanding of key international law principles.

“It helps law students develop skills in crafting highly convincing and persuasive written pleadings in court, alongside the subsequent oral rounds where the law student (or ‘agent’) must appear before several judges to plead their case as best as they can,” Brodeth explained.

The Jessup Competition, the world’s largest moot court event, challenges law students to present oral and written pleadings on complex international law disputes between fictional nations.

The Philippine Qualifying Rounds featured 107 oralists from 28 law schools nationwide, including top institutions like the University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University, University of San Agustin, and University of San Carlos.
