REMOVAL OF HAIR POLICY IN SCHOOLS PRESSED

/ 26 August 2022

THE REMOVAL of the hair policy in schools was pushed anew after three LGBTQIA children were forced to cut their hair to comply with their school’s dress code.

The move came after a Facebook post by a salon gained traction on social media. It showed before and after pictures of the children as face-to-face classes resumed on Monday.

Netizens on social media pointed out that academic performance is not tied with the length of hair.

“First of all, there is no scientific study that correlates academic performance with our hair. Our hair does not hinder our academic performance,” one netizen said.

Another added that students should be taught about diversity and self-expression and schools should be their first training ground on respecting others.

“We should be a world citizen— ready to embrace the diversity of people and culture. Children should not be raised thinking that there’s only one or two appealing haircolor and haircuts. Instead, they should be taught the diversity in people as a result of genetics, culture, race, ethnicity, and self-expression,” another added.

Aside from the haircut policy for boys, the use of hair color is also strictly enforced in most schools.
