PUP LAUNCHES RESEARCH PROGRAM ON AI ETHICS, GOVERNANCE

/ 26 January 2024

THE Polytechnic University of the Philippines recently launched its research program on artificial intelligence ethics and governance.

The program addresses the growing need for responsible AI development and deployment in the country, bringing together experts from various fields to explore the ethical, cultural, and social implications of AI technology.

It focuses on developing guidelines and frameworks for AI governance that align with the country’s values, culture, and priorities.

“As Al technology continues to transform how we Filipinos live our lives, it is important that we ensure its responsible use and development. It is also crucial that higher education institutions like PUP be at the forefront of promoting culturally grounded Al governance,” Dr. Manuel M. Muhi, PUP President, said.

According to PUP, the program covers various topics related to Al ethics and governance, including privacy and data protection, fair treatment, transparency and accountability, and societal impact assessment.

It also explores the role of Al in various sectors, such as healthcare, education, finance, and transportation.

The research will be supervised by the Research Institute for Culture and Language and the Research Institute for Strategic Foresight and Innovation, which are both under the Office of the Vice President for Research, Extension, and Development.

“Our research program on Al ethics and governance provides a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge sharing. We made headway in 2020 when we endeavored to become the hub for AI ethics research,” Dr. Anna Ruby Gapasin, VP for RED, said.

The program received support from diverse partners in industry, government, and academia, including the Office of Senator Pia Cayetano, the Philosophical Association of the Philippines, and academic institutions locally and internationally.

Meanwhile, a significant program output is a collaborative research-based book “AI Ethics Primer for Filipinos,” involving scholars from PUP, the University of San Carlos, the Philosophical Association of the Philippines, and De La Salle University-Manila.

The book is available for free in May. It is complemented by additional research on Filipinos’ attitudes towards AI, awareness, and media portrayal. More research projects are in progress.
