PUP COC-SC JOINS CANDLE-LIGHTING EVENT FOR SLAIN BROADCASTER
THE POLYTECHNIC University of the Philippines – College of Communication Student Council participated in the candle-lighting activity for slain broadcaster Juan “Johny Walker” Jumalon.
The activity conducted in front of the Commission on Human Rights was to denounce the murder of Jumalon, who was shot dead while broadcasting
by an unidentified gunman in Calamba, Misamis Occidental on Sunday.
PUP COC-SC President Aem Ignacio said that the impunity against the media also affects future media practitioners.
“Sa bawat buhay ng mga alagad ng midya na pinipili niyong kitilin, kinikitil niyo rin ang pangarap ng mga kabataang alagad ng midya. Kinikitil niyo ang kanilang kagustuhan na maglingkod sa sambayanan gamit ang kanilang mga boses, kamera, mikropono, at panulat,” she said.
Various media organizations such as Alyansa ng Kabataang Mamamahayag ng PUP, College Editors Guild of the Philippines, UP Solidaridad, National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, Union of Journalists of the Philippines UP Diliman joined the protest.
