PLM CREATES SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK
THE PAMANTASAN ng Lungsod ng Maynila will establish its School of Social Work which will upgrade and expand the Department of Social Work.
The proposal, which was the result of thorough planning with the support of former Department of Social Welfare and Development Secretary Judy Taguiwalo, was adopted by the PLM Board of Regents on October 21.
Taguiwalo is PLM’s presidential adviser for Social Work.
PLM President Emmanuel Leyco said that the pandemic highlighted the important role of social workers.
“This is the way PLM can contribute to nation-building at a time when poverty, hunger, and inequity are more pronounced,” he said.
The school’s Department of Social Work has produced 88 graduates per year since 1973, with 237 students currently enrolled in the undergraduate program for Academic Year 2021-2022.
The department, part of the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, has three full-time and five part-time faculty members.
“Social protection programs, resettlement projects, hospitals, schools, and programs of corporate social responsibility require the skills and commitment of social workers,” PLM said.
