MSU-IIT CLENS PROJECT HITS INT’L, DEVELOPMENT MILESTONES
A WASTE management system developed by the College of Computer Studies of the Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) has gained international recognition.
Dubbed the CLENS Project, the system was accepted for presentation at the 11th International Congress on Information and Communication Technology 2026 in London, highlighting its contribution to the growing use of digital solutions in environmental governance.
The project will also be featured in Springer Nature’s Lecture Notes in Networks and Systems, providing international exposure to MSU-IIT research and showcasing CLENS as a mobile-first platform designed to improve waste collection coordination in developing communities.
These milestones coincided with the completion of CLENS’ Alpha Testing Program in October last year, during which more than 40 students evaluated the system’s educational, functional, and interactive features at the College of Computer Studies.
According to the university, CLENS integrates artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, and gamification through modules on intelligent garbage analysis, community engagement, and water quality monitoring to promote proper waste segregation and environmental awareness.
Researchers said early results indicate that even a mobile-only system can significantly enhance transparency, responsiveness, and user participation—laying a solid foundation for beta development as the project concludes its current funding cycle.
