SEVERAL Filipino students bagged awards in two separate international competitions.
Lemuel Acosta and Mohammad Nur Casib from the Philippine Science High School Central Luzon campus and Gelraycs Jules Fornan of PSHS Soccsksargen Region campus bagged the bronze medal in the 55th International Chemistry Olympiad.
Kiersten Gene Calubaquib of PSHS Main campus was awarded the honorable mention.
ICho is an annual competition for the world’s most talented chemistry students at the secondary school level. Countries send a team of four students who are tested on their chemistry knowledge and skills in a five-hour laboratory practical exam and a five-hour written theoretical examination that are held on separate days.
Meanwhile, three PSHS Main campus students —Harold Scott Chua, Benjamin Jacob, and Dirk Erwin Tardecilla — emerged victorious during the 53rd International Physics Olympiad.
During the IPho, each national delegation is made up of at most five student competitors plus two leaders, selected on a national level. Observers may also accompany a national team.
The students compete as individuals and must sit for intensive theoretical and laboratory examinations.
The theoretical examination lasts 5 hours and consists of three questions. Meanwhile, the practical examination may consist of one laboratory examination of five hours, or two, which together take up the full five hours.
The Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute commended the students.
“Young Filipinos continue to shine on the international stage! Congratulations to the Philippine Teams to the 55th International Chemistry Olympiad and to the 53rd International Physics Olympiad. Months of training and sacrifices have paid off,” the DOST-SEI said.
