EX-UP LAW DEAN ELECTED AS MEMBER OF INSTITUT DE DROIT INT’L
RAUL Cano Pangalangan was elected as a member of the Institut de Droit International, an organization devoted to the study and development of international law.
He is the second Filipino to secure a post in IDI, after Florentino Feliciano, former associate justice of the Supreme Court.
“The IDI comprises the world’s leading public international lawyers and professors, including judges of the International Court of Justice and International Criminal Court, both at The Hague,” the University of the Philippines’ College of Law said.
Pangalangan, a former dean of UP Law, said he was “awed with the recognition” as he will sit with the most accomplished scholars and practitioners in the field of international law.
“At a time when it seems fashionable to be anti-foreign and anti-global, I hope our countrymen will see International Law as a venue to advance our interests in solidarity with other like-minded nations,” he said.
Pangalangan was a delegate in the drafting of the Rome Statute, which established the International Criminal Court. He co-chaired the national campaign for ratification by the Philippines and other Asia-Pacific states.
He has been a member of the Philippine Bar since 1984.
