THE EASTERN Visayas State University will offer Waray Culture and the Arts as general elective courses.
The Commission on Higher Education issued a memorandum rectifying the existing curriculum that does not recognize the subject as part of the nine mandated general education electives.
“In connection with this, faculty in the Languages and Literature Department proposed this course Waray Culture and the Arts as one of the general elective courses,” Sarah Cajipo, head of the general education department, said.
Cajipo said that the course was proposed by the Languages and Literature Department.
The young generation need to understand their own culture that forms part of their identity as Waray people, she added.
Meanwhile, Jhonil Bajado, head of Samar State University Museum and Archives, highlighted the significance of offering the said subject.
Bajado said that no higher education institution in the region offers the elective course.
“Congratulations EVSU…It is the first time that the Eastern Visayas State University will institutionalize [Waray Culture and the Arts] as a subject,” Bajado said.
