EASTERN SAMAR STATE UNIVERSITY RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST PROGRESSIVE UNIVERSITIES

17 July 2025

EASTERN Samar State University has earned a prestigious spot among the world’s most progressive universities, receiving international recognition for its strong commitment to sustainable development, global impact, and innovative education.

In a recently released global ranking, ESSU, which is located in Borongan City, Eastern Samar, was cited for its significant contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the areas of inclusive education, climate action, and community engagement.

ESSU President Dr. Andres C. Pagatpatan Jr. said the honor is a testament to the collective hard work of the university’s faculty, students, staff, and community partners.

“This is not just a triumph for ESSU but a victory for the entire province of Eastern Samar. It proves that even a university in a remote part of the Philippines can rise to global standards when the mission is honest, humane, and forward-looking,” said Dr. Pagatpatan.

Among the praised initiatives were the university’s community-based programs such as disaster risk reduction training in coastal barangays, renewable energy projects on satellite campuses, and scholarship opportunities for Indigenous Peoples (IP) and underprivileged sectors.

Dr. Pagatpatan also highlighted ESSU’s growing partnerships with international institutions, enabling faculty exchanges, research collaborations, and digital innovations — all geared toward achieving world-class academic excellence.

The recognition is expected to open more opportunities for ESSU students and faculty, including access to international funding, research grants, and global academic linkages.

Gov RV lauds ESSU

The provincial government of Eastern Samar also expressed support and congratulations to ESSU’s leadership.

Governor RV Evardone lauded the university for serving as an inspiration to the youth and a model for development-driven education.

“ESSU is a shining example of how education can be used as a tool for progress and positive change,” Evardone said.

Currently, ESSU has more than 20,000 enrolled students across its campuses in Eastern Samar and continues to expand its programs in line with sustainable and inclusive development goals.
