/ 27 August 2021

FOR her work in agriculture and fisheries, a Biology professor of the De La Salle University was named as one of the 2021 Southeast Asian Women in Science.

Dr. Chona Camille Abeledo, coordinator of DLSU’s Br. Alfred Shields FSC Marine Station program, was recognized for leading the “CrabTech” project.

Abeledo and her research team helped in the democratization of science and the development of practical technologies to advance agriculture and fisheries.

She was also acknowledged for creating a science blog and channel called “SHE-esnya” that aims to improve communications between the scientific community and other sectors of society.

“She has a diversified background in research rooted in a Bachelor of Science Degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology from the University of the Philippines-Diliman, which is complemented by a Master of Environment and Natural Resources Management degree from the UP Open University,” the SEA Women committee said.

“Her dissertation work on the molecular and morphological characteristics of Scylla species in the Philippines celebrates the synergy between genetics and ecology. She completed it from the De La Salle University with a Fulbright dissertation grant to the University of Washington in Seattle,” it added.

SEA Women is initiated by the Women’s Leadership Academy Alumni Network of the Young Southeast Asia Leader’s Initiative and supported by the US Mission to ASEAN, women’s leadership non-profit Wedu, and Tyne Solutions.

It is a platform that allows leading women across industries in the region to connect and engage for collaboration and speaking opportunities.
