OFFICIALS of the Colegio de San Lorenzo face legal issues for its sudden decision to close shop, Quezon City legal department head Orlando Casimiro said on Wednesday.

“Aside from being unfair, that’s very unusual that you’re scheduled to hold your first day of classes and then you announce that the school is closing. Definitely, there’s something we need to find out,” Casimiro said in a TV interview.

“Definitely, there will be legal issues to be faced by the school officials, and along those who are supposed to be held liable,” he added.

Casimiro said affected by the decision to shut down were 717 students from Nursery to Grade 12 and 652 college students.

On Monday, the school management cited “financial instability and lack of financial viability brought about by the ongoing pandemic and exacerbated by consistent low enrollment turnout” as the reason for the closure.

Department of Education spokesperson Michael Poa also said that the school did not communicate with them about its plans to close down.

Commission on Higher Education chairperson Prospero de Vera III said schools usually inform the commission in advance of their impending closure.
