CLSU DEVELOPS GENETICALLY SUPERIOR DUCKS
THE Central Luzon State University has successfully bred genetically superior ducks, in a bid to meet the growing demand for duck eggs and meat in the region.
A report by the Philippine Information Agency said that the project dubbed ‘Itik Pinas’ is under the Industry Strategic Science and Technology Program of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development.
This creates superior breeder ducks to elevate the quality, quantity, and consistency of the eggs, compared to native ducks.
The eggs are comprised of three lines: IP-Itim, IP-Khaki, and IP-Kayumanggi, which can produce around 257 to 266 eggs and are suitable for products like balut and salted eggs.
“So, all the expenses during the growing period, the three to four months of laying duck eggs, can cover the costs,” College of Agriculture Assistant Professor Jean Karla Julian said as stated in the report.
Farmers interested in entering the farming of superior ducks can coordinate with CLSU.
