STUDENTS from the Dr. Yanga’s College won a gold medal in the recent World Robot Olympiad in Canada for their invention: slippers that double as chargers.

The contest had 700 student participants from from 40 countries.

Philippine Robotics team members Naiah Nicole Mendoza, Denise Carpio and Abigail Silva launched Project Footwear through Environmentally-Enriching/Empowering Technology or better known as project FEET.

The slippers are made from recycled materials.

“Ang tsinelas na output ng Project FEET ay maaaring gawa sa Type 1 (PETE) o Type 5 (PP) plastics. Una itong pipira-pirasuhin ng shredder at didiretso ito sa mga molde na hugis suwelas. Ang molde na ito ay nakapatong sa isang heating device na siyang magtutunaw sa plastic. Pagkatapos nitong matunaw ay patutuyuin po ito sa katumbas na oras. Kapag tuyo na po ang tsinelas, automatic na ilalabas po ito ni Project FEET,” the students said.

“’Yung slippers pag tapos nang i-mold galing sa machine ay lalagyan ng piezo discs at powerbank para habang gamit ang tsinelas, makaka-generate ito ng electricity na manggagaling sa piezo discs na inilagay dito at ‘yung electricity naman ay maiipon sa battery nung powerbank upang ‘yung powerbank ay puwede  nang gamitin  kapag may sapat na electricity na sa battery,” they said.

“Para sa mga student, continue to pursue your dreams without hesitations even though minsan may fear tayo na baka mag-fail tayo or hindi tayo nararapat sa path kung nasaan tayo ngayon because if we are willing to learn, there will always be a way for us to achieve our goals.

“Do not set limitations sa kung ano ang kaya at hindi natin kayang gawin so if you are interested sa robotics or sa science and technology, ‘wag tayo matakot na sumubok, babae man o lalaki, dahil hindi masusukat sa kasarian ang ating kakayahan and we hope na sana gamitin natin ‘yung skills and knowledge or ‘yung learnings natin to create or innovate something na makatutulong sa society,” they added.
