BENGUET STATE U PRESIDENT URGES IGOROTS TO HELP REBUILD TRIBE IMAGE

/ 17 February 2021

BENGUET STATE University President Felipe Comila called on his fellow Igorots to help change public misconception on their tribe, which was the subject of an offensive self-learning module released by the Department of Education.

During a flag ceremony on Monday, Comila asked fellow tribe members to join in the campaign to “redefine” the meaning of being an Igorot.

“This is part of the process, while it has been written several years ago that that is how they see us Igorots, they will continue to have misconceptions or misunderstandings because we really haven’t done our part in rebuilding the integrity of our walls as Igorots,” he said.

“Let us build that wall, re-write about us, tell something about Ibaloi, Kankana-ey, Kalanguya among others. Because it’s us who should write about us coming from the heart and shared to the world,” he added.

The Department of Education recalled the offensive learning module saying it was mistakenly produced.

The department gave assurances that it does not tolerate or condone discrimination of any kind.
