TWO scholars from the Ateneo de Manila University have won the inaugural PEN Presents x International Booker Prize.

Dr. Alvin B. Yapan and Dr. Christian Jil R. Benitez were recognized for the book Time of the Eye (Ang Sandali ng mga Mata).

Originally written in Filipino by Dr. Yapan and translated into English by Dr. Benitez, the novel is set in Sagrada, Bicol, tracing the lives of three generations of the Nueva family as their stories intertwine with pivotal moments in Philippine history.

The work, which earlier won the Philippine National Book Award for a novel in a Philippine language, is now reaching a wider international readership through this recognition.

“This achievement marks an important milestone for Philippine literature, showcasing its depth and artistry on the global stage,” Ateneo said in a statement.
