THE ATENEO de Manila University was named as the top education institution in the country for 2023 based on the latest Times Higher Education World University Ranking.

Landing on the 351-400 rank bracket, ADMU had an overall score of 45.0-46.9 based on five pillars — teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook.

It surpassed the University of the Philippines, which fell to the 801-1000 bracket. Last year, UP was in the 601-800 bracket.

Ateneo had its highest score for Citations with 97, ranking 60th globally.

This pillar focuses on an institution’s “role in spreading new knowledge and ideas,” and “how much each university is contributing to the sum of human knowledge.”

The university also had a significant score for Teaching at 32.4. This metric focuses on an institution’s learning environment including student-to-faculty ratio, reputation, number of postgraduates, and institutional income.

“This performance shows that Ateneo is at par with our foreign peers, an institution that is truly global yet firmly rooted in our Filipino, Catholic, and Jesuit identity,” University President Fr. Roberto Yap SJ said in a statement.

“We’re especially proud of the fact that, despite being a relatively small institution, we are the top Philippine university in the rankings,” he added.

Aside from Ateneo and UP, De La Salle University and Mapua University also made it to the list, ranking 1201-1500 and 1501+ on World University Rankings 2023, respectively.

Meanwhile, Cebu Technological University, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology, University of Santo Tomas, University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines, Tarlac Agricultural University and Visayas State University submitted data for inclusion in the rankings but did not make the cut.

The World University Rankings 2023 included 1,799 universities in 104 countries and regions, making it the largest and most diverse university rankings to date.
