APOLITICAL OR POLITICAL? FEU STUDENTS DIFFER IN STAND

/ 1 May 2022

THE FAR Eastern University has been traditionally apolitical.

The university made the statement Friday evening after photos of some members of its volleyball team circulated online showing their support on the presidential candidacy of Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. and vice-presidential aspirant Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte.

The now-deleted photos showed some student-athletes wearing t-shirts bearing the images of Marcos Jr. and Duterte.

The student–athletes were also seen flashing the peace sign.

In a statement, the university stressed its students and employees may freely express support to candidates in their own personal capacity.

However, FEU said it does not represent the views of the university.

In a separate statement, FEU Central Student Council lamented the remarks of the university, saying that ‘education has always been political.’

FEU-CSO pointed out history has proven the university has pushed back against grave injustices and abuse of power.

The student body added the Tamaraws’ core values of Fortitude, Excellence, and Uprightness means calling to stand and fight for truth.

“We call upon the university to make its stand. Learn from your students and listen to your constituents. Tumindig na kami, sana kayo rin,” the student body said.
