ADMU APOLOGIZES FOR ‘ELITIST’ REMARKS
The Ateneo de Manila University has apologized for posting on Twitter what netizens perceived an “elitist” statement for freshmen.
“We framed and phrased this poorly and regret ending with such a tone deaf sentence. The casual callousness of our reply reflects, quite badly, on how we’ve let generations of elitism and privilege get to our heads. We hear you and we thank you for calling us out,” ADMU wrote in Twitter.
Earlier this week, the school drew flak after its verified Twitter account replied to a tweet from Team AMDG welcoming incoming freshmen for Academic Year 2021-2022.
Team AMDG urged the accepted applicants to follow the Ateneo Schools’ Twitter account. The university then replied to the tweet and offered additional advice.
“Accepted applicants need to gather their documents for confirmation, watch out for their school’s open house, and assess their other options well. We’re not for everyone,” ADMU said in its now deleted tweet.
The university said it promises “to do better and be better.” Ateneo released on Monday, May 17, the results of its college admissions for Academic Year 2021-2022.
