5 UP DILIMAN PROFS WIN NAST AWARDS

PROFESSORS of the University of the Philippines-Diliman recently bagged awards from the National Academy of Science and Technology.

The NAST recognizes outstanding achievements in science and technology and provides incentives to those engaged in scientific and technological research.

Dr. Gil Jacinto and Dr. Aria Corazon A. de Ungria were honored as NAST Academicians for their work in marine chemistry and in forensic DNA technology, respectively.

Jacinto is from the College of Science-The Marine Science Institute, while Ungria works at the UPD Natural Sciences Research Institute.

Meanwhile, Dr. Jillian Aira S. Gabo-Rati and Dr. Reinabelle C. Reyes were recognized as this year’s Outstanding Young Scientists in the field of earth resources engineering and astrophysics, respectively.

Gabo-Rati is an associate professor and deputy director for academic affairs at the National Institute of Geological Sciences.

Reyes, on the other hand, is an associate professor at CS National Institute of Physics.

Dr. Jayson G. Cosme of the NIP and research, extension and professional staff received the NAST-Philippines Talent Search for Young Scientists grand prize.

Cosme was recognized for his paper “Observation of a Continuous Time Crystal.” The paper “reports the first ever experimental observation of a new physical state of matter called continuous time crystals. Continuous time crystals exhibit emergent and spontaneous patterns in time, like how solids or like real crystals possess patterns in space.”

The OYS award is given to young Filipino scientists who have made significant contributions to science and technology.
