FIVE professors from the UP Diliman were named among Asia’s 100 top scientists by a Singaporean-based magazine.

The five Filipinos are Dr. Mario Juan Aurelio and Dr. Allan Gil of the National Institute of Geological Sciences, Dr. Pia Bagamasbad of the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Dr. Aletta Yñiguez of the Marine Science Institute, and Dr. Rinlee Buth Cervera of the College of Engineering Department of Mining, Metallurgical, and Materials Engineering.

Aurelio, Fernando, and Yñiguez were selected for environmental sciences discipline, while Bagamasbad and Cervera were chosen for biomedical sciences and engineering, respectively.

They were among 14 Filipinos included in this year’s list by the Asian Scientist Magazine.

To be considered in the list, the researcher must have received a national or international award in the preceding year for his or her research area, made a significant scientific discovery, or taken on a leadership role in academe or industry.

“The honorees featured in this year’s list have worked relentlessly and harnessed science to improve the lives of the people around them and the environment we live in,” ASM Chief Executive Officer and Publisher Juliana Chan said.

ASM recognizes the region’s exemplary researchers, highlighting their achievements across a range of scientific fields.
