Philippine Superliga (PSL) settled a decision to move the Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup to mid-February next year following the inconveniences brought by the strong typhoons that display threats and disturbances in Luzon.

The league earlier announced that the said tournament was supposed to take place this November 28 to 30 in Subic, however, with the current state of the country with both the coronavirus pandemic and super typhoon Rolly wreaking havoc all over the country, it just made it more impossible to stage the said tourney.

“..the safety of all athletes exposed to outdoor conditions and other participants and the effectivity of frontliners assigned to monitor both the Challenge Cup and to render essential public services during a calamity, it is with sadness that the PSL has decided to reschedule the Invitational Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup,” League Chairman Philip Ella “Popoy” Juico shared in a statement.

He confirmed the news and shared that baring the tournament is a conservative and proactive position.

“The PSL clearly sensed the serious concern expressed by the same frontline agencies in calamities. The officials in attendance spoke of their involvement as frontliners in alleviating the suffering of thousands in Central Luzon to be directly affected by nature’s wrath,” he noted.

“The PSL will therefore step out of the way for the common good, so these agencies can give their full attention to the public emergency,” included in the statement.

The league cited that with the venue located inside the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) which may be compromised due to the recent super typhoon surging the country they are left with no choice but to reschedule the tournament.

“Taking a conservative and proactive position, Central Luzon, which includes the SBMA industrial zone may sustain heavy damage to be inflicted by severe weather disturbances named ‘Rolly’ and ‘Siony’ within days of each other for the next several weeks starting [Nov. 1],” explained the league in a statement.

Sixteen teams were supposed to take part in the tournament with some teams already marking their schemes to participate in the league such as PSL clubs in Cignal, Sta. Lucia, United Auctioneers, and F2.

Moreover, the rival PVL teams Motolite and PetroGazz also signified their intention to join the PSL in their volleyball tilt, set to deploy one team each.
