DEPED URGED TO PREPARE STUDENTS FOR AI-DRIVEN FUTURE

/ 20 October 2026

SENATOR Pia Cayetano has urged the Department of Education (DepEd) to future-proof the country’s education system and promote the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in schools as technology continues to reshape the workplace.

Cayetano stressed the need to prepare students for the changing demands of the future workforce while ensuring that technology supports, rather than undermines, their learning and development.

She said the rapid advancement of AI has highlighted the urgency of developing forward-looking education policies that will equip Filipino learners with the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world.

Cayetano noted that while discussions about the future of education may previously have seemed abstract, the growing capabilities of AI have made the challenges and opportunities more apparent.

She emphasized the importance of teaching students to use AI responsibly without becoming overly dependent on the technology.

The senator also underscored the need to strengthen the four Cs of education: critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication.

She said these competencies are becoming increasingly important as AI automates certain tasks and transforms employment opportunities across industries.

While recognizing the importance of preparing learners for technological advancements, Cayetano stressed that students must continue to develop fundamental skills in reading and mathematics.

She said these foundational competencies remain essential in helping students navigate an evolving job market and adapt to a future increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence.

Cayetano’s call highlights the need for an education system that balances technological readiness with essential human skills to help Filipino learners meet the challenges of the future.
