UP MANILA ENTERS GLOBAL TOP 500; SOLE PH UNIVERSITY ON ELITE INDEX

20 June 2026

THE UNIVERSITY of the Philippines (UP) Manila has solidified its position as the country’s absolute top-ranking institution on the global index after breaking into the prestigious global top 500 list.

In a news release on Friday, the institution noted that it is the only university in the country to do so.

In 2025, UP Manila’s global placement was at No. 479. This year it landed at No. 447, following the evaluation of 2,250 higher education institutions across more than 100 countries.

This milestone coincides with the celebration of UP’s 118th Foundation Week.

UP Manila attributed this continuous multi-year ascent to an aggressive focus on academic excellence, robust medical research, internationalization, and expanding inter-local collaborations with local government units, state universities and colleges, and private higher education institutions.

“Central to this achievement is the implementation of the AGILE framework, which stands for Academe-Government-Industry Leadership Engagement,” it said.

The framework breaks down traditional academic silos, driving UP Manila to proactively reach out and collaborate with critical public and private stakeholders.

By utilizing this ecosystem to align academic training directly with government needs and industry demand, UP Manila ensures its immense human resources and research capabilities actively advance national public health policies, strengthen local government healthcare systems, and foster nationwide innovation.

The institution maintained its rank as first in the world for Normalized Citation Impact, a metric measuring how influential an institution’s scientific research is compared to the global average.

UP Manila said it ranked first for the percentage of Highly Cited Papers that are among the Top 1% Most Cited in the world, continuing its streak since 2025.

This depicts how its scientific publications are yielding world-leading impact and relevance in their respective fields.

In addition to these top global ranks, UP Manila placed among the world’s elite in clinical research, ranking No. 137 globally for its percentage of total publications within the top ten percent of most-cited papers, and securing the #202 spot worldwide in the specific subject ranking for Clinical Medicine.

Also this year, UP Manila ranked No. 1,642 in the Center for World University Rankings, several notches up from No. 1,677 in 2025.

UP Manila ensures the public that every scientific breakthrough, policy recommendation, and medical innovation it has generated translates into better clinical care, accessible medicine, and life-saving healthcare advancements for communities nationwide. (PNA)
