CNU SCHOLARS PUBLISH GROUNDBREAKING STUDY ON DIGITAL RESEARCH ADVISING

/ 13 February 2026

THREE scholars from Cebu Normal University have drawn global attention to the evolving landscape of academic mentorship after publishing a study on digital research advising in a Scopus- and Web of Science-indexed journal.

The research, authored by Dr. Remedios Cabaral Bacus, Dr. Michelle Mae Olvido, and Dr. Laurence Garcia, was published on January 31, 2026, in the Malaysian Journal of Learning and Instruction.

Using a phenomenological design, the study explored the lived experiences of senior research advisers transitioning from traditional face-to-face supervision to digitally mediated mentoring.

The researchers analyzed how digital advising practices address the evolving and diverse needs of student researchers, from undergraduate to advanced graduate levels, highlighting both the benefits and emerging complexities.

Bacus and Olvido are faculty members of the College of Teacher Education, while Garcia, now serving as university president, is affiliated with the College of Nursing, Allied Health and Sciences.

“The publication underscores Cebu Normal University’s growing presence in internationally indexed research and contributes to global conversations on innovation, quality, and adaptability in higher education research practices,” the university said in a statement.
