CHILD RIGHTS GROUP CONDEMNS PRESCHOOL FIREARMS ACTIVITY IN BUKIDNON
GABRIELA Women’s Party National President Arlene Brosas criticized a recent “educational learning tour” conducted by the 89th Infantry Battalion in Bukidnon after photos circulated online showing preschool children holding rifles.
Brosas, a former lawmaker and long-time child protection advocate, said exposing young children to firearms is unjustifiable and constitutes child endangerment. She stressed that such activities put children at risk and should not be framed as youth development or community engagement.
“Allowing children to handle firearms crosses a clear line and violates basic child protection standards,” Brosas said. She added that the exposure could have lasting psychological impacts, especially for children in heavily militarized communities.
Gabriela Women’s Party has called for an immediate investigation and urged authorities to issue a directive banning firearms in any activity involving children, whether loaded or unloaded.
Brosas recommended that civic education for preschoolers focus on human rights, peace-building, disaster preparedness, health, and social services—lessons that foster responsible and compassionate citizenship.
The incident has sparked public concern and renewed calls for stricter measures to ensure children’s safety during military and community activities.
