TAGUIG JOINS LITERACY CHALLENGE

/ 23 July 2025

TAGUIG City Mayor Lani Cayetano has joined the “Mayors for Literacy Challenge” (Bayang Bumabasa), a national initiative led by the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM 2).

The move reinforces the city’s mission to promote a strong reading culture and boost literacy among its youth.

Following the lead of Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto, Cayetano’s participation highlights Taguig’s commitment to education, equity, and holistic development.

“We believe in encouraging and supporting every young person to read because it is the key to raising literacy levels. In Taguig, we are Bayang Bumabasa—a reading nation—and our comprehensive programs reflect this deeply held conviction,” Cayetano said.

Taguig has launched numerous innovative initiatives to nurture a love of reading. These include BINNIBASA, the city’s official reading influencer and AmBASAdor, designed to make literacy fun and engaging. Reading Nooks in schools provide students with access to both classic and modern literature.

The city’s flagship Oplan Linaw program, initially focused on distributing free eyeglasses to students, has already benefited over 60,000 residents as of June 2025.

Taguig also operates four E-libraries offering free internet, educational resources, and printing services—bridging the digital divide for learners.

During school breaks, the Taguig Mobile Kitchen travels to barangays, providing nutritious meals while conducting reading sessions and distributing picture books to children.

Beyond literacy, Taguig’s education programs are expansive and inclusive. Over 100,000 college students benefit from the city’s scholarship program. Elementary and high school students receive full uniforms, supplies, allowances, and financial aid to ensure no child is left behind.

A citywide feeding program runs in 156 fully operational child development centers, while programs like Taguig Cares and psychosocial services address students’ mental health and well-being.

With 52 public schools now connected to Wi-Fi and equipped with computer laboratories, laptops, and smart interactive screens, Taguig is preparing its learners for the future. Teachers also receive training to adapt to technology-assisted learning.
