AI LITERACY KEY TO PREPARING LEARNERS FOR THE FUTURE WORKFORCE, SENATOR SAYS
SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian on Saturday underscored the urgent need to strengthen artificial intelligence (AI) literacy in the basic education system, saying it is essential to prepare Filipino learners for the demands of the future workforce.
“Boosting artificial intelligence literacy in the country is crucial in preparing our learners for the workforce,” Gatchalian said. “We can no longer delay our students’ readiness when it comes to AI.”
Gatchalian stressed that as AI rapidly transforms industries and job markets worldwide, the Philippines must equip its young learners with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in a technology-driven future.
However, he cautioned that AI must be used as a tool for inclusion rather than a factor that worsens existing inequalities.
“We must make sure that AI becomes a tool for inclusion, not for the exacerbation of the digital divide,” he emphasized.
To support this goal, Gatchalian announced plans to refile the Digital Transformation in Basic Education Act in the upcoming 20th Congress.
The proposed measure seeks to bridge the digital divide and ensure that the country’s basic education system is fully equipped to integrate digital tools—including AI—into teaching and learning.
This initiative builds on Gatchalian’s longstanding advocacy for education reform, particularly in ensuring that Filipino learners are prepared for the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly evolving digital world.
