SENATOR SUPPORTS WIDER STEM EDUCATION ACCESS

/ 15 June 2025

SENATOR  Christopher “Bong” Go lauded the ratification of the bicameral conference committee report on Senate Bill No. 2974, or the Expanded Philippine Science High School (PSHS) System Act, calling it a significant step toward providing greater access to quality science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education nationwide.

Go, a co-author of the measure, underscored the importance of enabling more talented Filipino students—especially those from far-flung and underserved areas—to pursue science-focused secondary education through the PSHS System.

He also expressed gratitude to Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri, the principal sponsor of the measure.

“Suportado ko ang panukalang ito dahil naniniwala akong napakahalaga ng pagpapalawak ng access sa dekalidad na edukasyon sa agham at teknolohiya. Kailangan nating tugunan ang lumalaking demand sa mga rehiyon para sa ganitong klaseng edukasyon,” he said.

The proposed law authorizes the establishment of up to two PSHS campuses per administrative region, except the National Capital Region, which already hosts the main campus.

To promote equitable access, the bill limits each province to one campus, ensuring that educational opportunities are more evenly distributed throughout the country.

The measure also places the PSHS under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), governed by a centralized board responsible for maintaining academic standards, overseeing campus operations, and guiding long-term development.

To ensure the sustainability of the expansion, the bill mandates a comprehensive national review of the PSHS System’s performance and demand fifteen years after enactment. Only after this review can any increase beyond the two-campus-per-region limit be considered.
