SENATOR URGES LGUs TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF CHILDREN DURING VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS
SENATE Committee on Basic Education Chairman, Sherwin Gatchalian urged all local government units to prioritize children’s safety during volcanic eruptions.
“Whenever a disaster strikes, children are often the most affected. Aside from the disruption to their education, they also experience severe psychological trauma and stress. Therefore, it’s crucial that we make their welfare a priority. We must ensure they are in safe spaces and have access to basic needs,” said Gatchalian.
Gatchalian highlighted the importance of providing safe and child-friendly spaces for evacuated children. He also emphasized the need to ensure access to food, water, medicine, and sanitary kits.
Furthermore, Gatchalian stressed the importance of maintaining learning continuity and providing psychosocial first aid to affected children.
Moving forward, Gatchalian urged the full implementation of the Ligtas Pinoy Centers Act (Republic Act No. 12076), which mandates the establishment of evacuation centers in all cities and municipalities nationwide.
