UNICEF, EXPERTS HOLD WORKSHOP ON CLIMATE-RESILIENT CHILD PROTECTION IN VALENZUELA
REPRESENTATIVES from UNICEF, the Child Protection Network, and key officials from Valenzuela City gathered for a workshop aimed at strengthening child protection systems against climate-related risks.
The event, titled Co-Creating the Concept of a Climate-Resilient Child Protection System, sought to develop a unified approach to safeguarding children amid climate challenges.
Led by UNICEF Philippines Chief of Child Protection Patricia Lim Ah Ken and Dr. Bernadette Madrid, the workshop brought together experts from Valenzuela’s Social Welfare and Development Office, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Health Office, and Engineering Office.
Discussions focused on identifying climate-related risks in the city, evaluating existing mitigation programs, and enhancing child protection services during climate emergencies.
Participants emphasized the growing vulnerability of children and women to extreme weather events and the urgent need for proactive measures to ensure their safety.
The initiative also aims to strengthen coordination among local government agencies and international organizations to sustain child welfare services before, during, and after climate-related disasters.
“Protecting children from the impacts of climate change requires a multi-sectoral approach,” said Patricia Lim Ah Ken.
“This workshop is an important step in building a system that prioritizes their needs and ensures their safety, even in the face of environmental challenges,” she added.
Valenzuela City officials reaffirmed their commitment to developing a climate-resilient child protection framework.
