SENATOR BACKS REDUCTION OF TEACHERS’ PAPERWORK TO IMPROVE EDUCATION

/ 21 March 2025

SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian has reiterated his call to reduce the paperwork burden on teachers, stressing that minimizing non-teaching tasks will allow educators to focus on their primary responsibility: ensuring student proficiency in their subjects.

He noted that excessive administrative work has long been a major concern among teachers, affecting their ability to provide quality education.

“Reducing paperwork will help our teachers focus on their most important task: ensuring that our learners achieve proficiency in their subjects,” Gatchalian said.

He emphasized that improving student learning outcomes requires giving teachers the time and capacity to teach effectively.

The senator pointed out that addressing the workload issue is a crucial step in resolving the country’s education crisis, adding that enhancing teachers’ welfare will significantly improve the overall quality of education in the Philippines.

To ease the burden on educators, Gatchalian proposed increasing the number of non-teaching personnel in public schools. By assigning clerical and administrative duties to dedicated staff, teachers can devote more time to lesson planning, classroom instruction, and student engagement.

Additionally, the senator underscored the importance of digitalization in streamlining school processes. Implementing technological solutions, such as automated record-keeping and digital submission of reports, will not only improve efficiency but also reduce the manual workload of both teaching and non-teaching staff.
