SENATOR EXTENDS ASSISTANCE TO 1K INDIGENT COLLEGE STUDENTS
SENATOR Christopher “Bong” Go has provided assistance to 1,000 indigent college students as part of his ongoing commitment to supporting education and the well-being of Filipino youth in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.
As chairperson of the Senate Committee on Youth, Go also emphasized the importance of mental health services in educational institutions. He co-authored and co-sponsored Republic Act No. 12080, the Basic Education Mental Health and Well-Being Promotion Act, which institutionalizes mental health programs in schools to address the growing concerns among students.
Additionally, Go is one of the authors of SBN 2598, the State Universities and Colleges Mental Health Services Act, which seeks to establish Mental Health Offices in State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) to provide comprehensive support and intervention for students, faculty, and staff once enacted.
“Mental health is a crucial issue that we must address alongside other health concerns. It’s important for students to have someone they can turn to if they’re struggling with their mental health,” Go emphasized.
If passed, the measure will require the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and public Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to implement mental health campaigns and provide accessible services within campuses. The bill also aims to raise awareness of mental health issues, support at-risk individuals, and improve access to counseling and intervention programs.
The recent enactment of RA 12077, or the Student Loan Payment Moratorium During Disasters and Emergencies Act, demonstrates Go’s commitment to ensuring continued education for students during crises. This law, which he co-sponsored and co-authored, provides temporary financial relief for students with outstanding loans during calamities.
Go has also co-authored and co-sponsored several other important education-related laws, including RA 11510 (the Alternative Learning System Act), RA 11984 (the No Permit, No Exam Prohibition Act), RA 12006 (the Free College Entrance Examinations Act), and RA 11997 (the Kabalikat sa Pagtuturo Act), which enhance support for students and teachers alike.
