SENATOR PUSHES FOR MEASURE TO INTEGRATE INTERNET SAFETY EDUCATION IN CURRICULUM

/ 28 January 2025

SENATE President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada is advocating for a measure that would teach elementary and high school students how to navigate the virtual world safely and responsibly.

Estrada filed Senate Bill No. 2934, which proposes integrating internet safety education into the school curriculum to help students understand the risks of the internet and protect themselves from online dangers.

“The Internet Safety Protection Act is a proactive approach to ensure Filipino children are informed and resilient in the digital age,” Estrada said. “By including this in the curriculum, we aim to create a safer online environment and protect the next generation from the evolving threats of the virtual world.”

While Republic Act No. 11930, or the “Anti-Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children Act,” established a strong legal framework against online crimes, Estrada said his proposed bill would act as a preventive measure, empowering children to protect themselves from online risks.

The proposed program will focus on safe internet usage, increasing awareness about the dangers of social media, cyberbullying, and online predators. It will also educate students about privacy protection, identifying fake news, and balancing online and real-life interactions.

The Department of Education will be tasked with developing and implementing the program, including educational technology, lesson plans, and professional training for teachers. The department will also launch public education campaigns and coordinate with other agencies for resources and guidance.
