HOUSE APPROVES MEASURE ESTABLISHING PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN ISOLATED AREAS

/ 22 September 2024

THE HOUSE of Representatives has unanimously approved on third and final reading a measure that aims to establish public basic education schools in geographically isolated, disadvantaged, and conflict-affected areas. This initiative will also provide access roads leading to Last Mile Schools.

With 185 votes, the lower chamber passed House Bill 10823, authored by Representatives Roman Romulo, Joey Sarte Salceda, Yedda Marie Romualdez, Jude Acidre, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Jose Aquino, and Jaime Fresnedi. The bill seeks to ensure equitable access to education for those in isolated and conflict-affected regions of the country.

The measure also calls for the creation of a five-year roadmap for the education system, aimed at closing gaps and fostering the development of families in these underserved areas.

In addition, the House approved House Bill 10840, also with 185 votes. This bill seeks to establish the Young Farmers and Fisherfolk Challenge Program, a project designed to support and empower young individuals involved in agriculture. The program will encourage farmers and fisherfolk aged 15 to 35 to pursue careers in agriculture, participate in policy formulation, and receive support for agri-business and entrepreneurship initiatives, recognizing the role of youth as essential partners in food security and agricultural development.
