TEACHERS’ Dignity Coalition Chairperson Benjo Basas said that opening of classes in provinces and cities under state of calamity should have been postponed.

“‘Yun lang mga areas na talagang affected…pinakamadali dyan ‘yung mga nag-declare ng state of calamity, ‘yun lang naman po sana,” Basas said in an interview in TeleRadyo.

“[Sa] state of calamity ang bilis nating nag-declare eh ‘di ba? Tapos dun sa postponement nung classes ay kanya-kanya. School to school ang ginawa po natin,” he added.

The TDC chair stressed that the Department of Education should have considered those teachers that are not yet ready to attend classes as they were affected by flood.

“Paano sinasabi ng DepEd na okay ‘yung school at ‘pag okay ang school ay may pasok. Parang ‘yung school ang consideration…ready ba ‘yung teacher na binaha? Ready ba ‘yung community? ‘Yung mga magulang?” Basas said.

According to the DepEd, over 800 schools have postponed the opening of classes.

Meanwhile, Basas said that they have received reports that some school supplies have been damaged due to Typhoon Carina which devastated areas nationwide.
