DANGERS OF TOBACCO AND VAPING NOW ADDRESSED IN K TO 12 CURRICULUM

/ 15 June 2024

THE DANGERS of smoking tobacco and using vape are now being addressed in the K to 12 curriculum, according to Department of Education Assistant Secretary Dexter Galban.

“This is the age bracket where they are approaching the time when they will be legally allowed to purchase tobacco and vape products,” Galban explained.

“We not only highlight the dangers but also present better alternatives for mental health and well-being, such as counseling, engaging in sports, or participating in socio-civic activities,” he added.

Additionally, teachers are being educated about vapes, as some devices do not resemble traditional e-cigarettes.

“Some teachers are unaware that the USB-like device a student is holding could be a vape,” Galban noted.

“We need to train our teachers to identify these products, as they are rapidly evolving and changing,” he added.
