THE PHILIPPINE Business for Education stated on Saturday that the country’s learning crisis is worsening, saying that many 10-year-old students do not know how to read
“Sadly, our state of education — lumalala po ang ating learning crisis at ‘yun nga po nakita natin sa mga international study at assessment [na] 9 out of 10 ng ating mga 10-year-old ay hindi marunong magbasa ng simple na text,” PBED Deputy Executive Director Diane Fajardo said in a radio interview.
Fajardo also disclosed that 15-year-old students are being left behind in Math, Science, and English subjects.
“Ang ating mga 15 year olds naman, according to PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment), ay nangungulelat sa Math, Science [and] English,” she said.
According to the World Bank’s 2022 report on global learning poverty, 9 in 10 Filipinos could not read and understand a simple age-appropriate text at age 10.
