THE QUIRINO State University launched a bamboo project to help with environmental sustainability and academic progress.

Dubbed as ‘Bambusari: A Bamboo Development Project’, the venture aims to utilize QSU’s idle land into a bambusetum, a garden with a collection of bamboo plants, and as a Student Instructional Unit.

Bambusari was the coined term for ‘sari-saring bamboo’, meaning a variety of bamboo spices, the university said.

Once established, the SIU can be used for agriculture, forestry, biosystems, engineering, hospitality management, and tourism management, a research area for faculty members, and a potential income generating project of the university.

“The Bamboo Park will provide students with firsthand learning experiences, fostering research and innovation in bamboo-related fields,” QSU said on its website.

Bamboo is a versatile plant that plays an important role in reducing pollution, improving soil, biofuel, food, construction applications, and providing livelihood opportunities.

Owing to this, bamboo farming is slowly becoming a catching traction in the country, generating almost 11,000 jobs in 2022, according to a report by the Philippine Star.

The project was launched at the QSU Research and Development Clonal Site last week.
