FACULTY of the University of the Philippines slammed the submission of AI-generated academic documents by students.

They said that artificial intelligence can be used to help students but AI outputs should not be passed as scholarly work.

“The faculty of UPD AI program condemns the outputs of these systems to misrepresent as valid scholarly works. Manuscripts, graphic designs, videos, computer programs, and other academic requirements must be solely created by the student or group of students as required by the instructor of the course,” they said.

“However, the use of AI tools to enhance and facilitate the students’ learning should be encouraged. AI tools can improve our writing skills, provide rapid visualizations and prototyping of our ideas, enable quick access to a large body of knowledge, and demonstrate to us how to build better computer programs,” they added.

The issue surfaced after a teacher in the university called out a student who submitted an output which was found to be written mostly by AI.

The faculty encouraged the university to open discussions on AI, including AI tools in the generation of academic requirements, educate students on the proper use of AI, and improve academic requirements to include more in-depth critical thinking.
