TO ADDRESS reading illiteracy, the Department of Education said that it will intensify its Brigada Pagbasa program.
“We would like to really pursue vigorously the Brigada Pagbasa program,” Undersecretary Tonisito Umali said.
The department will expand the reading program by including tutorials on different subjects.
“Brigada Pagbasa will be like a Kumon, like a tutorial program that will help our children cope with the lessons, day-to-day lessons. We will make sure that no child will be left behind,” Umali said.
He added that the department plans to tap the business sector for volunteer tutors.
“They will now volunteer their time and say I’m an accounting graduate, I’m a math major in college and I’m willing to teach children struggling in math,” he said.
DepEd, with the help of World Vision, launched Brigada Pagbasa in 2019 to address the reading illiteracy problem in the country.
