LAWMAKER PUSHES INCLUSION OF FINANCE LITERACY COURSE IN CURRICULUM
CAMARINES Sur Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte Jr. has filed a measure that seeks to include economics and personal finance literacy in the curriculum in elementary, secondary, tertiary and technical-vocational education.
Villafuerte said that financial education should start in childhood and continue into adulthood.
Teaching students about money at an early age will assist them to make informed decisions on financial matters, he added.
“The financial education is aimed at forming responsible adults when it comes to financial matters, and avoid recklessness when it comes to fraud and gambling,” Villafuerte added.
House Bill 9856 or the proposed Economics and Financial Literacy Curriculum and Training Act mandates the Department of Education, Commission on Higher Education and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority to collaborate with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, the Department of Finance and the Securities and Exchange Commission in developing the academic standards, curricula and materials for the EPF course.
“This measure encourages a shift in attitude when it comes to financial literacy to give our youth financial knowledge, better financial attitude and better financial behavior,” Villafuerte said in his explanatory note.
